Ventura may be a mellow beach town, but business is bustling, with new ventures being established every day.
The 2013-2018 Economic Development Strategy is our blueprint for success. In this economic climate, it is critical that we explore innovative economic development strategies; this document seeks to do just that. It is a “living” plan that will be updated with input from our partners so that it stays nimble and relevant.
Our plan focuses on six key areas:
- Responsive and Effective Government;
- Tourism, Retail, and Quality of Life;
- Entrepreneurship and Economic Gardening;
- Healthcare and Biomedical;
- Regional Agriculture and Food
Each of the 89 action items in the plan is rooted in one of the following economic development approaches: business creation/entrepreneurship, business retention and expansion, and business attraction. What does this mean? We want to help entrepreneurs launch their companies here, we want to help existing businesses thrive here, and we want new businesses to locate here!
AUTO CENTER & OLIVAS PARK
The City is proud to continue its partnership with area property owners and the Ventura Auto Center to expand sales in the Auto Center and to locate destination retail at the site directly behind the current Auto Center. We have successfully completed the preliminary groundwork that will allow us to proceed with design and construction of a new road that will connect Olivas Park Drive to Johnson Drive. Developing this land will create jobs, increase our tax revenue and help Ventura to remain a competitive shopping destination in the region.
THE WELLNESS DISTRICT
The Ventura Wellness District will serve as a centralized location for access to top-notch medical and healthcare providers. Anchored by Community Memorial Hospital, the Wellness District encompasses the Ventura County Medical Center, along with a wide variety of physicians, mental health specialists, dentists, chiropractors, optometrists, therapists, audiologists, podiatrists, family planning centers, outpatient care centers, laboratories, diagnostic imaging centers, blood and organ banks and home health care services.
The City has established a strong partnership with Community Memorial Hospital (CMH), which is undergoing a major expansion and construction of a state of the art medical facility. Together with CMH, we are adding a new 571 space parking structure that will encourage new economic investment around the hospital. This burgeoning area will be known as the Wellness District and will encompass walking paths, open spaces, modern office space, and new retail amenities.
Kaiser Permanente has plans to construct a new 7.6 acre campus on Valentine Road and Market Street. The medical campus will feature an amphitheater, cafe lounge seating with an outdoor fireplace, meditation garden, and community garden with communal table. Active space includes children's play area, outdoor fitness equipment, nature garden, and Thrive walk. Kaiser intends to pursue a LEED Gold certification (or the equivalent).
